The RCDSO licenses and oversees nearly 10,000 dentists in the province.

Patients must be able to put their trust in dentists. When a patient visits their dentist, they expect a trained, licensed professional to provide safe, ethical treatment and the highest standard of care. It is our responsibility to ensure that dentists have the necessary qualifications to do just that. The safe care of patients and protection of patients’ rights is our first priority and at the heart of everything the College does.

Summary: Dentist will understand pathogenesis and possible treatment options for patients dealing with osteonecrosis of the jaw.

 

Course Outline:

• Discussion of symptoms of osteonecrosis and developing the diagnosis

• Causes of medication related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ)

• Discussion of antiresorptive therapy (bisphosphonates, denosumab), chemotherapy, poor oral hygiene, infection and their relationship to MRONJ

• Treatment modalities and strategies for managing MRONJ, osteomyelitis and osteoradionecrosis

Professional Liability Program

Session Description: The Professional Liability Program provides malpractice protection and risk management advice to Ontario dentists. This interactive session on communication will be presented by two PLP professional staff members. It will include an introduction to PLP and its services, followed by a discussion of the the value of effective communication within the healthcare setting. The presenters will describe basic and advanced communication techniques and offer guidance on how to avoid communication pitfalls.

Learning Objectives: At the end of the session, participants will be able to:

• Describe the services offered by PLP.

• Understand the importance of effective communication within the healthcare setting.

• Describe basic and advanced communication techniques.

• Identify and prevent situations that may lead to miscommunication.

Implant treatment planning is highly dependent on diagnostic imaging. The invention of conebeam CT has introduced the ability to see the alveolar process three-dimensionally, allowing for more accurate analysis before implant placement. In this course, the anatomy of the structures that pertain to implant placement will be discussed. Dr. Tamimi will guide the participants through the 2D and the 3D appearance of the maxilla, mandible and the maxillary sinus, as well as the diagnostic sequence for evaluating a CBCT scan. The analysis of pathology and the decision tree for diagnosis will be discussed.

Dr. Hamdan is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Graduate Periodontics Program, Faculty of Dentistry at Dalhousie University. He received BDS (DDS) from Jordan University of Science and Technology in 1999. After he graduated he practiced general dentistry for 12 years before going on to pursue an MSc in dental sciences at McGill University.
